Before Texas there was Tejas, when Mexico owned the land that is now the Lone Star State. Most Americans are familiar with tales of Texas independence, but what does Tejas money tell us about the Mexican side of Texas history? Mexican Tejas coinage was born into and witness to the hard times of war, and tells a very different story about the conflict. In this intense class, instructor Ricardo de León Tallavas will review the coinage of Mexican Independence, the short-lived Empire of Iturbide, counterstamps, and the popular Liberty Cap and Rays series. Students will explore the period from 1805 to 1836, when Mexico lost her Tejas and Texas was born. Remember the Alamo, but also learn some of the untold stories - and discover a few forgotten issues!
